Where is the center located?

The main center of the Woodall Program is located in Columbus, Georgia.  The eight-county service area includes Chattahoochee, Clay, Harris, Muscogee, Quitman, Randolph, Stewart, and Talbot counties.  Satellite classes are located in Harris, Talbot, and Stewart.  In Muscogee County, there are additional classes at Baker Middle School, Carver High, Hardaway High, Shaw High, and Spencer High.

How much do the services cost?

Any family regardless of income is eligible for these services. The program is part of the Georgia Psychoeducational Network (GPN) and is funded by the Georgia State Legislature through the State Department of Education.

Who are the SEBD students?

The severely emotionally disturbed/behavior disordered students are those who have severe emotional disturbance such as schizophrenia and adjustment reactions; severe behavioral disorders resulting from, but not limited to, neurological impairment, autism, cultural deprivation, developmental lag, and family-related problems. Eligibility for psychological education programs does not include socially maladjusted students unless it is determined that they are also severely emotionally disturbed. Ordinary classroom behavior problems and social problems, such as delinquency and drug abuse, do not automatically qualify a student for placement.

What services are offered to SEBD students?

  • Therapeutic education programs
  • In-school follow-up
  • Teacher conferences and services
  • Psychological and educational assessments
  • Individualized academic instruction
  • Parent conferences and services
  • Consultant services to schools and agencies
  • How are students referred to the program?

Any student from birth through age 21 with suspected severe emotional or behavioral disorders may be referred to the Woodall Program.  Students referred to the Woodall Program may exhibit a variety of presenting problems; however, in order to be considered for placement, it must be determined through the intake process and the placement committee meeting that the major presenting problems are emotional in nature, unless they are due to autism.  Following a comprehensive assessment, eligibility is determined, and an individualized education plan (IEP) is developed by a placement committee, which should include the student's parents, regular education teacher, and a representative of the local education agency. Parental consent for placement is required before a student can receive services.

    What is the treatment program?

The therapeutic education program helps students resolve their emotional conflicts by developing new skills and building on existing skills. Praise, encouragement, and positive experiences help them become more self-confident. Each student's program is individualized to meet the goals of his/her IEP.  Students attend psychological education classes daily. The goals of most psychological education classes are to help students to
  • Strengthen developmental skills
  • Participate in large and small group settings
  • Learn more acceptable behaviors
  • Respond appropriately to people and the environment
  • Work independently
  • Establish friendships
