FAMILY LITERACY

Definition

 “Family literacy services” means services that are of sufficient intensity in terms of hours, and of sufficient duration, to make sustainable changes in a family and that must integrate opportunities to learn new skills and discover new abilities in the following activities:

Services

  • Parent literacy training that leads to economic self-sufficiency
  • Training for parents to be the primary teacher for their children and full partners in the education of their children
  • Interactive literacy activities between parents and children

Activities

Opportunities for parents to become involved in any of the family literacy components:

Interactive Literacy Activities

  • Provide booklets with information, tools and activities they can use in the home to succeed in school to help their child develop the skills critical to academic success
  • Host family reading activities to improve thinking and memory abilities, build language skills and identify resources for problem readers
  • Facilitate homework assistance exercises to develop positive study habits and skills and encourage them to use time well
